The argument for digital vs. print is common across industries from internal processes to external product, but when it comes to signs you may be surprised to discover that the traditional and the high tech both have their benefits. Is digital really more expensive than fixed signage? That depends on the design and the materials used.

There are some incredibly expensive building (and stunning) signs that don’t involve a screen. How much less would you spend annually on signage if you invested in a digital sign? These answers to your calculations may surprise you. The pros and cons go beyond the individual preferences of the consumer, and beyond cost.

The argument for digital signage begins with flexibility. Your digital sign can display just about anything you like; it is, after all, mostly a computer monitor. Think of it like a tablet hardwired to one spot. You can alter the display at little to no cost – depending on whether you’re able to craft a new advertisement in-house or you have to contract it out. Change it with ease, or even run several ads at the same time in a loop.

Building Sign 2Cost is a big concern with digital signage, but that’s really a start-up investment. Afterwards, its maintenance and troubleshooting. A worthy investment if you’ve got an ideal spot to display your digital sign, and an audience who will appreciate it. Interior displays will last the longest because they’re sheltered from weather of all kinds, but there’s something to be said in favour of exterior digital signs. In general, digital signs beckon from afar, and are just as easily changed when your promotions do, adding weight to the pros list.

Traditional – or print or fixed signage – on the other hand is simpler to install and can be quite a bit easier on the ‘ol budget. Exterior signage can still run your bill up because it’s designed to impress and sustain all kinds of weather variables, but interior signage, whether part of your regular display or seasonal, tends to make bookkeepers happy. The fixed part is a con that can turn your head towards digital; you don’t have to design digital ads with enough time to print anything up, and you don’t have to store holders or signs to use again, and if you want to make slight changes in the same campaign a year later you can do so quickly and inexpensively on a digital sign.

Both digital and traditional signage can be custom built to suit your space exactly, with the features you want. With digital signage you want to choose a place that is both eye-catching and easily visible. Direct sunlight can make screens difficult to read, for example. You run into similar concepts with traditional signage in that placement is everything, but it may not be attractive or efficient to cover your shop or convention booth with signs. Digital signs can play video tutorials and demonstrations, and show off more than one campaign. Traditional signage can be designed and ordered up on the fly, particularly if you’re working with us.

So, who wins in the battle of digital vs. traditional? You do! Grand River Sign Design works with you to come up with a sign design to fit your needs and your budget, both digital and traditional. Come by our
