What’s in a building sign? Marketing strategy, team discussions, cost comparison, competitor analysis, and hours of agony spent choosing just the right spot to hang it. Your building sign is both a homing beacon to customers already on their way in, and an alert to everyone else that you exist. How big should your sign be? Should you use your logo? Is a lighted sign really worth the fuss? Don’t make snappy sign decisions, make permanent ones to make sure you’re getting the best sign for your business, your building, and your buck.

Building Sign 3Although it’s a main feature of your storefront, keep your sign design simple. Company name, and possibly your logo. While the general rule of signage is that you have less than 10 seconds to capture someone’s attention, with building signs you want to be noticed faster. You’re not talking about your latest sale or highlighting clever slogans, you’re identifying your location so that incoming customers can find you quickly, and potential customers will remember you’re there when they need you.

Should your sign be a replica of your logo or letterhead? That will depend on the type of sign you choose, where it’s going, and budget. Your sign doesn’t have to replicate your logo, but it should adhere to your brand’s colour scheme at the very least. If your branding relies heavily on blue and white, but your building sign is red because you think it’ll stand out better, you risk disassociating customers who come looking for blue and white. They’ve already scoped you out online and become accustomed to your branding, or it could be that they’ve seen your building sign and take a look for you online but think they’re looking at the wrong website because the colour scheme is different.

Have fun with your physical display. If you want a traditional box sign with your company name on it, go for it! But what if you’re leaning that way because it’s the only thing you know? Here are some other options:

  • Channel Letters are individual 3-D, LED-lit letters. Mount them on a background or directly onto the building façade. Channel letters are beautiful, easy to read, and literally stand out.
  • Dimensional Letters are 2-D individual letters. Like channel letters, you can mount them on a background or directly to the building façade. Signs made of dimensional letters can be sleek, professional, whimsical, or vibrant.
  • Illuminated Signs offer a brilliant way to put a spotlight on both simple and complex sign design. Illuminated signs refer to backlighting or the aforementioned channel letters. Backlighting has many options to play around with colours and positioning to create depth and drama beyond the traditional box light.

Lastly, check out lease agreements and by-law regulations to make sure you follow all the rules and obtain permits before going ahead with your sign.
